Geology Rocks Weekend at the Museum of Natural History in Roger Williams Park

Discover the stories locked within the Earth’s rocks with family-friendly geology activities, planetarium shows, and more! From majestic mountains to the deepest canyons, learn how to read the planet’s history in stone.

Special “Geology Rocks” Happenings (10:00 AM – 4:00 PM):
  • Family Fun Activities: Embark on a geology quest, solve the rock cycle puzzle, create fun crafts, and more!
  • Cost: Free with museum admission
12:30 PM – 1:30 PM: Paper Mountains
  • Explore why maps have squiggly lines and complete a paper mountain activity to improve 3D visualization and topographic map skills.
  • Cost: Free with museum admission
1:00 PM & 2:00 PM: Cosmic Collisions Planetarium Show
  • Take a thrilling journey through space and time to explore hypersonic cosmic collisions that shape the universe. Produced by the American Museum of Natural History.
  • Cost: $5 per person (includes museum admission) | Free for Museum Members
  • Notes: Planetarium tickets are required for everyone attending. Children must be age 4 or older.

Join us for a hands-on, educational, and fun exploration of Earth and space!

Blithewold Homeschool Days

Join us on the last Tuesday of each month, March through May, for hands-on, fun, and educational programs at Blithewold! Each session explores science, history, and art through indoor and outdoor activities designed to spark curiosity and learning. Our curriculum aligns with RI, MA, and CT state standards, making it both engaging and educational.

Activities include:
Jan 27: Learning about Herbs & Botany Games
Feb 24: Butler & Maid Tour
Mar 31: Phenology – The timing of nature’s cycles
Apr 28: How to Measure & Calculate the Value of Trees
May 26: Letterboxing Workshop

Students drop off for the program (ages 8–13), with one adult chaperone required to remain on the property for security. Don’t forget to bring lunch, water, and weather-appropriate clothing—we spend lots of time outdoors! Adult chaperones and younger siblings are welcome to picnic on the Grounds during lunch.

Between lessons, there’s time to explore the Great Lawn, run around, or enjoy a relaxing picnic, making each session a full day of learning and fun!

The 38th Annual Newport Winter Festival returns this February with 10 days of live music, foodie contests, kid-centric activities and more on The Classic Coast. Newport Burger Bender

Newport Burger Bender, the “best burger” contest is back. Local restaurants are throwing their buns in the ring with hopes of being crowned the Best Burger and there is more than just beef. Try one. Try Some. Try them all. Then vote for your favorite burger! Choose from over 50 beef, non-beef (seafood, chicken, bison, etc.), and plant-based burgers!  More information to come on 2026 participants! Free Open Houses at the Betsey Williams Cottage in Roger Williams Park

Step back in time and explore the Betsey Williams Cottage, built in 1773 and once home to Roger Williams’ great-great-great granddaughters, Betsey and Rhoda Williams.

Upon her passing in 1871, Betsey Williams bequeathed the cottage and 102 acres of farmland to the city of Providence, forming the foundation of Roger Williams Park.

FREE Open Houses (weather permitting):

  • Discover stories of early Providence and the Williams family
  • Enjoy a hands-on, family-friendly historical experience

Wednesday Morning Bird Walks with Audubon

Audubon offers small-group Wednesday Morning Bird Walks with naturalist Laura Carberry. Each week a new birding destination will be chosen. Advance registration is required. Location will be sent to registered participants in advance.

West Coast Conifers Tour

70th Annual Newport Saint Patrick's Day Parade

The 70th Annual Newport Saint Patrick's Day Parade is scheduled for Saturday, March 1st 2026 at 11:00 AM. Find your best green attire, keep your eyes open for leprechauns, and join in the revelry to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Newport! The parade kicks off from the Newport City Hall and runs through Washington Square, down Thames Street, and ends at St. Augustine's Church. Parade will be held rain or shine.
