New England covered bridge at Christmas New England’s lively cities, snug towns, and snow-swept mountains are a perfect backdrop for Christmas and holiday celebrations and traditions. Come and enjoy classic favorites, like performances of “The Messiah” or “The Nutcracker, and local traditions, like the festive lighting of the Nubble Lighthouse in Maine. Lodgings offer plenty of ways to combine a holiday getaway with pastimes like skiing, shopping, or theater-hopping.

Horse-Drawn Holiday Carriage Ride & Holiday Photos - Bristol, RI

 Horse and carriage rides at Blithewold A garland-draped carriage will take a trip down Blithewold’s wooded Lover's Lane and across the Great Lawn. Families will be photographed in the sleigh before the ride begins.
Hot chocolate and cookies will be served in the Dining Room before or after the ride. Pre-registration required.
Time: Noon-4 p.m.
Admission: $80 for a group of 4, each additional person $10. Fee includes admission to Christmas at Blithewold.

Tree Lighting Ceremony and Christmas Village - Watch Hill, RI

Ignite the Christmas Spirit at Ocean House's Tree Lighting Ceremony and Christmas Village. Children will help us light the outdoor Christmas Tree and then Santa Claus will arrive on a fire truck! Seasonal snacks, alcoholic (cash bar) and nonalcoholic beverages will be available. Guests are asked to bring a toy for our toy drive. You can get your holiday shopping done early in the Christmas Village, featuring an array of products from local purveyors.

Winter Lights Market and Tree Lighting 2017 - Providence, RI

Providence’s holiday tradition will feature a wealth of activities for all. Head to City Hall on Friday, at 5 p.m. for the Christmas tree lighting, followed by a Winter Lights Market in Burnside Park from 5 to 9 p.m. Live performances, giveaways, and an artist marketplace continue December 2 at the City Center skating rink, Dorrance and Washington streets.

The Polar Express Train Ride 2017 - Woonsocket, RI

The station is full of activities for the kids before departure of the train and all of the Polar Express characters are there for photos. Plan on staying at least 30 minutes after The Polar Express Train Ride returns from the North Pole. Santa stays for photos with the children and their families. Sparkle welcome families to Blithewold's for marshmallow roasting, singing of Christmas carols, sipping cocoa and strolling through the lighted garden paths. S'mores kits are for sale. Performances of carols around the fire happen at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Pre-registration required Dates: Fridays, November 24, December 8 and 22.

Winter Festival 2017 at Roger Williams Park and Zoo - Providence, RI

Afternoon hours are noon to 3 p.m. for kids and families and feature a visit with Santa, ice carving demonstrations, holiday treats and an opportunity to hop aboard the Carousel Express train or ride the historic Carousel.
During the evening, 4 to 8 p.m., join friends and family take a horse drawn hayride through the park, visit Santa, see a dazzling holiday light display, enjoy a variety of food carts, sip some hot cocoa and get into the festive mood. All ages welcome.
Time: Noon-3 p.m. and 4-8 p.m.
Admission: The event is free, but there is an extra fee for attraction rides.

Christmas 2017 at the Newport Mansions - Newport, RI

RI newport chirstmas at mansions Come to the Newport Mansions for holiday music, tours, a gingerbread mansion contest, shopping, and visits from Santa Claus Enjoy model trains at the Breakers, a Gilded Age streetscape at the Elms, and garden exhibits at Marble House. New this year, on display in the kitchen of each mansion will be a large gingerbread model of the house, each created by a local pastry chef.

Highlights include visits with Santa Claus at The Breakers December 3, Marble House December 10, and The Elms December 17 (noon-3 p.m.);
Holiday Evenings of tours, live music, and Christmas foods at The Breakers November 25; December 2, 9, 23, and 30 (6-8 p.m.); and
Holiday Evening Duet on December 16 at the Elms and Marble House (6-9 p.m.). Rosecliff will be open daily from December 3 - January 1.

“The Messiah” with The Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra - Providence and Woonsocket, RI

These concerts will feature the complete Oratorio, which spans the Messiah’s life from birth, to persecution and death, to glorious resurrection. Soloists for these concerts will be soprano Kelley Hollis, mezzo-soprano Megan Roth, tenor Jesse Darden, and bass-baritone John Allen Nelson.
