The wonder of nature is at the top of many conversations lately, and it also should be foremost on a list of vacation adventures. Rhode Island is awash in beautiful outdoor places where visitors can explore, play, and learn. The Ocean State is justly famous for its lovely shorelines and fabulous beaches on the Atlantic Ocean and Narragansett Bay. All forms of water play – swimming, boating, fishing, and more – are at hand for people who love the breeze and salt water. All that is great fun, but it is only a start. Inland, a variety of state parks – for example, the Arcadia Management Area in South County – are the place to find deep woods, hiking and mountain biking trails, places to picnic and camp, and fresh-water lakes with sandy beaches. Rhode Island Audubon, headquartered in the lovely town of Bristol, RI, manages 9,500 acres of wildlife refuges and also offers programming for adults and kids that helps people find and enjoy the highlights of the refuges. Also, let’s remember that ecology is entwined with history. The rivers of the Blackstone River Valley are where the first textile mills opened the Industrial Revolution in America. Those inland areas are now mostly pristine wooded areas where people can paddle or walk alongside the river and learn about the old mills that still appear here and there along the shores. And please don’t imagine that beautiful nature is far from the populace. For instance, Goddard Memorial State Park, in the city of Warwick, RI, is an expanse of woods, fields and beaches on Greenwich Bay where people love to picnic, swim, hear live music, ride horse trails, and more.
