Arts center celebrates work of area artists and serves as gathering spot for community events

See the history, vitality and talents of Rhode Island’s cultural communities framed through the work of its emerging and established artists at the Warwick Center for the Arts. The center’s brick building, a National Historic Landmark, is located in one of the city’s historic village centers, solidifying its role as a cultural center. In addition to main gallery exhibits that change every four to six weeks, the center offers art demonstrations and workshops, gallery talks, film screenings and a variety of community events. Every Friday night, the Bring Your Own Improv troupe offers two comedy shows, and each winter there’s a market to support the work of local artists and artisans. The center also offers a variety of youth art classes and camps.

Travel back to 19th century when you visit this family mansion, museum

Journey into the 19th century when you step inside the Clouds Hill Museum. The house was built in 1872 by William Smith Slater as a wedding gift for his daughter, Elizabeth Ives Slater, and has passed through four generations of the same family. Designed by William Walker & Sons, the museum contains original interiors (including carved fireplace surrounds by well-known artisan Charles Dowler) and furnishings as well as extensive collections of textiles, porcelain and glass. The property features 70 species of trees and shrubs for delightful strolls, and the Carriage Museum has over a dozen carriages. Call to arrange a tour or check the website for a prescheduled opening. No reservations are required. The home is decorated for the holidays starting in early December.
