Objects from the Costume and Textiles collections illustrate the universal impulse to capture the fleeting art of the butterfly. Juxtaposed with its usage in western design, the traditional symbolism of the butterfly in Asian art will be explored and decoded as a design inspiration and as a material in itself. Beginning in the early 19th century, landscape evolved into a popular theme in Japanese printmaking. This subject matter was transferred to the medium of woodblock printing, where richer content appeared. This exhibition will highlight depictions of famous places (meisho), including selections from the museum's complete set of Hiroshige's T˙kaid˙ (Eastern Sea Route) prints and Hokusai's series of the "Thirty-Six Views of Mt. On a night in the spring of 1827 the city of Vienna, Ludwig Von Beethoven is slumped over his piano and the completed manuscript for his Tenth Symphony. It is his final and greatest work. As the clock strikes midnight, Mephistopheles appears to collect the great composer’s soul. So begins Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s inaugural performance of “Beethoven’s Last Night” in its entirety.
