Queen of the Insects: The Art of the Butterfly
Rhode Island School of Design – Providence Now through May 9, 2010 Transformative, ephemeral, and otherworldly, the butterfly has enchanted cultures for hundreds of years. The butterfly motif has adorned a wide variety of design objects. Objects from the Costume and Textiles collections illustrate the universal impulse to capture the fleeting art of the butterfly. Juxtaposed with its usage in western design, the traditional symbolism of the butterfly in Asian art will be explored and decoded as a design inspiration and as a material in itself.

Mountains and Rivers: Scenic Views of Japan
Rhode Island School of Design – Providence Now through July 10, 2010 Beginning in the early 19th century, landscape evolved into a popular theme in Japanese printmaking. This subject matter was transferred to the medium of woodblock printing, where richer content appeared. This exhibition will highlight depictions of famous places (meisho), including selections from the museum's complete set of Hiroshige's T˙kaid˙ (Eastern Sea Route) prints and Hokusai's series of the "Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji."

Nature/Artifice: Contemporary Works from the Collection
Rhode Island School of Design – Providence Now through February 28, 2010 The relationship between nature and artifice, reality and fiction, is central to a selection of contemporary paintings, sculpture, and video in the Museum's collection. In some cases, natural materials- a lemon, thistles, or rocks, for example -are placed in artful arrangements or altered to extend their significance. Conversely, manufactured materials-ranging from audiotape to flip-flop sandals-may be configured to resemble natural phenomena. Location: RISD Museum, 224 Benefit Street.

Watercolors in the Porcelain Gallery: Flower and Still Life Painters
Rhode Island School of Design – Providence Now through March 31, 2010 The RISD Museum has one of the finest collections of 18th- and 19th-century British watercolors in this country. Rotating exhibitions of watercolors from this collection are on view in the Museum's Porcelain Gallery, home to an outstanding group of 18th-century figural ceramics. Now on view are works by British artists who specialized in painting flowers, fruits, birds and their nests. This subject matter appealed to both professional and amateur watercolorists, including a number of female artists. Location: RISD Museum, 224 Benefit Street.

Eagle Cruise on the Connecticut River – Smithfield, RI, to Haddam, CT March 20, 2010 Join Rhode Island Audubon for a van trip to Connecticut to view eagles wintering along the Connecticut River. Naturalists aboard RiverQuest will assist in identification of birds. RiverQuest has a large heated cabin, restroom, and open decks. Tours are about 75 minutes.
